Improving Spectral Efficiency in a Mobile Network

The Challenge

Our client needed to research the impact of base station antennas (BSA) on user experience and radio network KPIs (throughput and spectral efficiency, amongst others) in real networks.

| The Outcome

We were able to conclude there were different spectral efficiency values between equivalent antenna models and, thus, we developed a benchmarking tool to use in the marketing to BSA selling.

How We Did It

Simulations and theoretical studies carried out indicated that a remarkable impact could be expected. We decided to experience a new approach using Big Data and Analytics aimed to evaluate if such implications can be derived from real network data.

We conducted a study using different data sets from a mobile network operator (MNO) Tier 1, such as configuration data and KPIs of radio nodes, as well as the data within the complete inventory of BSAs.

  • Accurate performance indicators

Showing ratios differences in the 800 MHz, 1.8 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands

  • Theoretical result demonstrated

Thanks to our benchmark tool to be used by our client
